Anastasia Komar, born in 1986, holds a master's degree in architecture and environmental design and currently resides in New York. Her work features detailed paintings interspersed with biological sculptures, continuing her long-standing exploration of mythology and science. Anastasia's pieces have been exhibited at the School of Visual Arts Gallery in New York, Asphodel Gallery, New Collectors Gallery, and the CICA Museum in Korea. Additionally, she has personal sculpture projects at specific locations in New York and California.

Anastasia Komar's practice is rooted in deconstructivist philosophy, characterized by the fragmentation and manipulation of structures and surfaces, as well as the interplay of complex and impossible forms. Her conceptual work often draws from obscure historical narratives, folklore, and overlooked social issues. Through the fusion of traditional painting techniques with modern materials, she presents unique relationships between plane and space, organically blending and reinterpreting traditional forms of painting and sculpture.

Komar frequently references science, theology, and history, presenting the unknown and the eternal through brief, vivid, and luminous strokes in her paintings. Additionally, she uses glass-like mixed materials for her sculptures, echoing images of biological molecules and mythological mammals. The mixed-media entities with protruding edges and covered surface suggests a parasitic or symbiotic relationship.

HeLa ,2021

The work “HeLa” features a thorny, serpentine, translucent body encircling an elegant fritillary flower at its end. The split form symbolizes violence and persecution, as well as the mourning and sorrow that follow such harm. “HeLa” refers to a type of immortal cell derived from Henrietta Lacks, an African American woman whose cells were used in cancer research. Komar uses this piece to remind viewers of the historical exploitation of women and minorities and the scientific breakthroughs they pursued.

In “Hitodam”, Komar examines her inner world through the depiction of surreal biological forms. “Hitodam” is related to Japanese folklore and describes glowing orbs believed to represent human souls. In Komar's multidimensional work, this enigmatic life form spans the space between the artwork and the viewer, illuminating the unnamed emotions and imaginings within our spiritual realm.

“My practice is based on deconstructivist philosophies such as the fragmentation and manipulation of structure and surface, and the interconnection of complex and improbable forms. Currently, I examine the notion of spatial tension.”

Each piece of Komar's work is composed of delicate glass polymer vines extending across the canvas, with abstract surfaces meticulously crafted through fine brushstrokes. Her detailed technique enhances the sculptural quality of the works, drawing inspiration from the tradition of pointillism and offering a modern interpretation of this painting method.Komar's recent work explores ethereal compositions and the concept of spatial tension. In her solo exhibition "Hosts" at Fragment Gallery, she continues her exploration of mythology and science.

Anastasia Komar

Anastasia Komar's works embody her examination and exploration of history and existence, attempting to infuse her spiritual world into her sculptures. These works extend beyond specific boundaries, intruding into the viewer's field of vision, breaking existing forms of art and concepts of space, and establishing new relationships and thoughts from within.
