Kim Deok Han:“Traces of Time” in Lacquer Art and Color

04/18/2024

Kim Deok Han (born 1981) is a new-generation artist who expresses the concept of "淡" (dan, meaning subtlety or simplicity) through the traditional material of lacquer. The artist applies multiple layers of lacquer in various colors, then repeatedly strips them away, leaving only subtle traces of each layer. Since each layer must be completely dry before the next one is applied, this process requires a significant amount of time and patience, typically taking six to twelve months to complete. By stripping away and leaving traces of each layer, the artist captures their accumulated existence, revealing every past moment on a single plane of the artwork. The use of ancient lacquer also ensures that the works can be preserved for thousands of years. Kim creates captivating and thought-provoking works by utilizing this meditative material and color tones inspired by traditional Korean hanbok and music.
