Even if what we seek remains elusive, can the act of seeking itself hold profound meaning?
As an individual in existence, Jiayang Huang is undergoing a long journey of search. If his earlier works in the United States were outward explorations through the photographic history and internet cultural memes, then this exhibition can be seen as a reflection of his recent two-year shift in focus towards the internal and the past.
The “Dream” in the exhibition title refers not only to the entanglement and struggle between possibility and inevitability experienced by the characters in the works, but also to the object and method of the artist’s inward exploration during the creative process. Employing psychoanalysis as both a tool and a frame of reference, Jiayang delves into themes of selfhood, growth, and family dynamics. The works offer no straightforward interpretations; instead, through an interplay between poetics and games, we experience his journey, bearing witness to the confusion, fantasies, conflicts, and resolutions therein.
The Dream within Huang Long Cave reveals familial narratives spanning two generations - the artist's and his father's, and On the Path of the Gem Mount takes us on a seemingly endless trek blending reality and virtuality, where we experience the stretched and extended psychological time. Meanwhile, The Puzzle of Aechmea Fasciata, a video work made two years ago, can be seen as a turning point bridging geographical and temporal distances, offering a glimpse into the motivations behind Jiayang's act of pursuit.
This exhibition does not hastily offer a conclusive answer regarding the outcome of the search. Whether or not we successfully play through the game work in the exhibition, we may discover a similar quest deep within our own consciousness, and find solace in this shared human experience. After all, delving into the depths of one's inner self usually demands courage greater than any outward journey.

HuangLong Dream: GAME is an interactive narrative game based on the real-world landscape of "HuangLong Cave" in Hangzhou. The game delves into complex themes of personal growth, family relationships, and self-awareness. Set in a virtual space, the game features three variations of HuangLong Cave from different time periods, each inhabited by the same character—Yell. Players engage in conversations with Yell at various stages of his life, gradually uncovering the challenges he faces. Throughout the game, players must search for clues within the environment to help Yell confront and resolve these challenges. Only when Yell gains the courage to face life can players advance to the next level. This interactive experience is not only a journey of character development but also a dialogue between the player and their own inner self.
HuangLong Dream: Machinima is a first-person game documentary directed by the artist. The audience follows the director's perspective, constantly shifting between the roles of "player," "creator," "protagonist," "child," and "self." As the story and interactions unfold, this journey of exploration gradually reveals the secrets hidden within HuangLong Cave.
HuangLong Dream: Dance is a single-channel digital video that captures Yell unconsciously beginning to dance upon hearing familiar music within HuangLong Cave.
HuangLong Dream: Family Album revisits old photographs from over 30 years ago using a documentary approach. This family album serves not only as a recollection of past memories but also as a modern echo of those times. Many elements from these family photos are referenced in the game setting of HuangLong Dream, where players can discover additional real-world clues. The work aims to blur the boundaries between reality and the virtual, as well as between past and present.
On the Path of the Gem Mount is a dual-screen video work that documents the artist's journey up Gem Mountain in search of "HuangLong Cave." This quest triggers a series of inner reflections and self-expressions. The film employs two recording mediums—documentary footage and 3D scanning—to capture the same path up the mountain, offering a dual perspective that reveals the intricate details and deeper meaning of this search. During the climb, the artist expresses his inner thoughts to his father on six topics: strolling, writing, art, contradiction, symptoms, and desire.
Gem Mountain: 3D Print is a miniature reproduction of the mountain's geographical features. Both the story of Path of Gem and HuangLong Cave take place within the context of this Mountain. This mountain carries the imprints of the artist's father's experiences as well as the artist's own childhood memories.
The Puzzle of Aechmea Fasciata is a self-reflective essay film that narrates the protagonist's struggle with an obsession over the Aechmea Fasciata flower, leading them on a fantastical journey in search of life's meaning. After a series of reconstructed memories, blending reality and imagination, the protagonist ultimately comes to terms with and lets go of their fixation on finding meaning.

In this exhibition, the artist formally integrates psychoanalysis into the creation and practice of media art. Through an analysis of self and family, he embarks on a journey of exploration and creation that is both reflective and dialogic. He aims to traverse the blurred boundaries between reality and the virtual, between past and future, in search of his own "Name-of-the-Father," ultimately stitching together a complete sense of self. Through this exhibition, the artist hopes that the audience will not only feel the warmth of his exploration but also be inspired to reflect on their own inner journey. In this dual experience of visual and psychological engagement, he hopes each viewer can find a sense of inner peace.
